There's no easy way to say it, this warm weather is not helping to preserve the trails and they are starting to show the effects of not having any new snow or cold temperatures. The snow that we do have is melting a bit more each day and trails are continuing to be soft and getting more saturated with the melting snow. The narrow spots are getting narrower and there are more areas are showing the ground underneath especially in the Meadow Loop area. Don't let that scare you away, there are still plenty of areas to ski, but it is definitely Spring-like conditions out there and it looks like more of the same for the near future. Last night temperatures only got down to the mid 30's and it's looking like it is going to eventually get up into the 40's again today.
Ginzu's were used last night grooming fresh skate on the Meadow Loop, the Cut-Off's and the BCT out to the northern terminus, making passes on Stonewater Loop, the Beaver Creek Loop and Swamp Creek Loop and Grizzly Mtn. You will still find a mix of nice trails in most of the open meadows and thin/narrow/uneven trails as you head into any of trails in the trees. We will continue to do our best with the snow we still have and we thank you for understanding that this is just an abnormal winter.
CAUTION AREAS: The south side of Hot Tub Hill is almost completely bare now, so walking up or around the lodge (see the posted map) are the best options. The Hitching Post area is getting thin and narrow, but is still passable and unfortunately we are probably going to lose the section from Mountain Springs to Stonewater if the warms temps continue through the week. The Walk-In Trailhead bare spot is now trail wide and skiing through the stadium to the far entrance of the Meadow Loop is an option. We are still using the Stonewater detour to their walking bridge, so be sure to follow the signs if you are trying to ski the BCT through that area. Grizzly Mtn. also has a trail wide melt out on the ascent up and the pond at the road crossing is getting bigger.
CLOSED TRAILS now include Sprint Loop and all of the Mill Hill Complex (Mill Hill, Rowdy Coyote, Chainsaw Ridge, Cougar Run and Lumi Lane) due to exposed ground and melt outs. Signs are posted.
PARKING LOTS: The Beaver Creek Parking Lot is now CLOSED due to the mud, so proceed to the Osprey Lodge Trailhead which is holding up the best as it is an actual gravel parking lot. The Meadow Loop parking lot is definitely struggling right now and has areas that are very soft and muddy, so all wheel drive is recommended and please do your best to park on firmer ground.
Our Saturday Clinics (10am-12pm) have been very popular with the kids, but we just wanted to give a reminder that they are great for all ages and can be customized for skate or classic. It's a great way to learn better technique and the ability to enjoy our sport even more. Information and sign up can be found HERE.
