After temperatures almost hitting 50 again yesterday, but eventually dropped down to freezing early this morning, so we continued our modified grooming and ginzu's were used last night to set fresh skate on the Meadow Loop, the Cut-Offs, the BCT out to Mountain Springs Lodge, Rowdy Coyote, most of Mill Hill (Mud slide on the top), Sprint Loop and the rest of BCT from just past Stonewater Loop out to the Northern Terminus. We skipped the rest of the trails to help preserve the snow that we do have. We lost the Stonewater Bridge to water again, so the way to connect the BCT is back to using the walking bridge, so disregard the Wrong Way signs on the farthest north junction just before the skiing bridge until we can make the proper adjustments. Classic tracks are overall holding up on a majority of the trails, so we have left them as they are. It's only the middle of January, do we aren't giving up on winter, even though it feels like spring when we are getting towards the end of the season. The forecast for today is for patchy fog and temps rising to the mid 40's.
The best conditions will continue to be in the meadows around each of the trailheads where there is more snow making up the base and trails in the morning should start relatively firm and will continue to soften up as the temperatures climb. If you venture into the trees, be aware of thinner/icy spots in the tree wells and a few bare spots starting to poke through. Trails may also be uneven in areas where we don't have a lot of base to work with. Overall there is still plenty of coverage to make for some good skiing, so please get out there and use it while we still have it.
PARKING LOT UPDATE: The Meadow Loop Parking Lot was used last night for the ski practice parking yesterday and will be in rough shape in the entry and left side. The right side will still be icy, so 4wd is highly recommended along with staying to that right side that has gravel underneath. The Beaver Creek Parking Lot is fairing a bit better because it's being used less, but it is melting and grass is starting to show through, so use caution and stay on the firmer areas. 4wd recommended. The Osprey Lodge Parking Lot should be a bit better since it is a gravel lot, but could still be icy and other spots that are slushy. 4wd is also recommended. This is a tough stretch of unseasonal weather we are going through right now and we hope to have winter back very soon.
