Now that the temperatures are dropping below freezing at night, it is making for very firm trails that are lasting most of the day. It is both good and challenging news as it means the trails are firming up, but is making some of the thin trails feel more like ice especially in the trees, so use caution any time you head into the trees on steep terrain. Be aware of organic materials that are dropping from the trees and dotting the trails. We are doing our best with the snow that we have and you will find a mix of really good skiing in the open meadows around all of the trailheads and areas of ice, exposed ground and low snow conditions when you head into the trees. Ski under control and know your limits.
Mill Hill is CLOSED due to mud slides and caution areas are parts of Rowdy Coyote (which has bare spots and will close soon), Hot Tub Hill (bare spots, icy), around the hitching post area at Mountain Springs Lodge (bare spots), and a pond reforming at the road crossing. Use caution on these thin, uneven areas.
Still under our modified grooming plan, Ginzu's were out early last night trying to groom the trails when they are a bit softer, but once the sun goes down, it becomes a challenge to be able to dig into the trail surface and produce the beautiful corduroy we all love. Up north, the BCT was groomed for skate from just over the Stonewater Bridge which has a detour over their walking bridge (follow the signs) all the way to the northern terminus, making passes on the Beaver Creek Loop, Swamp Creek Loop and Grizzly Mountain. Overall it turned out better than expected and there are some really good areas especially around the Osprey Lodge trailhead. From the Meadow Loop, the SnoCat was out setting skate and and new classic in the Meadow Loop, the BCT out to Mountain Springs Lodge and fresh skate on the Sprint Loop, all of which is looking good minus the far entrance to the Sprint Loop which has bare spots.
All wheel drive is recommended in all of the parking lots, but they are all looking a lot better than they were at the beginning of the week. There are icy spots, so please use caution when walking to the the trails.
Tour de Plain this weekend is CANCELED due to safety concerns on parts of the race course that have low snow coverage. We apologize for the inconvenience and are still planning to make the rest of the series happen with the hope that we get more snow. More information about the Tour de Plain Race can be found by clicking the link.
But we do have our Saturday Clinics 10am - 12pm, which are great for all ages and can be customized for skate or classic. It's a great way to learn better technique and the ability to enjoy our sport even more. Information and sign up can be found HERE.
And we also have our first weekend Immersion Clinics which are for all levels to elevate your skills! Enjoy a hearty ski-in lunch at Mountain Springs Lodge plus a waxing lesson. The goal for beginners is for them to be able to independently ski on flat terrain, able to climb hills and know how to navigate skiing down a hill. Intermediate skiers will review technique fundamentals, explore drills, and address personal goals to improve your technique.
