TGIF!!!, and we are thankful to still have snow to groom, even if it is starting to get thin in some areas. We are still in that same pattern of no new snow, but temperatures dropping into the mid 20's at night and getting up into the low 30's during the day under mostly cloudy skies. It is helping to keep the snow that we do have, but the trails are thirsty for more and the current forecast doesn't seem to know when that is going to happen. We remain hopeful though and just as we have said for what seems like the last month, each of the trailheads still provide some good skiing especially in the open meadows and it's when you venture into the trees, that trails start to get thin, uneven and some exposed areas. Overall, it is well worth your time to click those skis on and get out on the trails.
Grooming happened last night freshening up the skate lanes as the existing classic is still mostly holding up and setting new tracks could be challenging in these conditions. The SnoCat was back out on the Meadow Loop and the Cut-Off's, while the Ginzu's made passes on the Sprint Loop, the BCT all the way out to the northern terminus, hitting Stonewater Loop, Beaver Creek Loop and Swamp Creek Loop on the way.
The main areas of concern are Hot Tub Hill, driveway crossings, the Walk-In Trailhead, the far entrance to the Sprint Loop and one small section on the ascent of Grizzly Mtn, which are narrow and have bare/icy spots. Almost all of the BCT (minus Hot Tub Hill and driveway crossings) still has coverage and can be skied in its entirety. We are still using the Stonewater detour to their walking bridge, so be sure to follow the signs.
CLOSED TRAILS now include all of the Mill Hill Complex (Mill Hill, Rowdy Coyote, Chainsaw Ridge, Cougar Run and Lumi Lane) due to trail wide bare spots, icy spots, melt outs and a mud slide. Signs are posted.
SAFETY NOTICE: DO NOT SKI ON SLEIGH TRAILS at Mountain Springs Lodge. Please obey the signs and only ski on groomed ski trails.
All wheel drive is recommended in all of the parking lots as they are all holding up pretty well, but there are icy spots, so please use caution when walking to the the trails.
You can still sign up for our Saturday Clinics 10am - 12pm. They are great for all ages and can be customized for skate or classic. It's a great way to learn better technique and the ability to enjoy our sport even more. Information and sign up can be found HERE.
