Yesterday was such a beautiful day to be out skiing. Even though it was a little cold, just having some sunshine really made it feel wonderful. The good news is that today is calling for it to be almost the same. The temperatures last night dropped down to the mid teens and it is supposed to only get up to around 30 with the fog burning off and becoming sunny, which means trails will again be firm and fast, but overall holding up in most places and allowing for some really good skiing given the conditions. The best skiing will still be in the open meadows around each of the trailheads, with the Meadow Loop being the favorite right now.
Grooming happened last night freshening up the skate lanes as the existing classic is still mostly holding up and setting new tracks could be challenging in these low snow conditions and may actually make them worse. The SnoCat was out on the Meadow Loop and the Cut-Off's, the BCT out to Mountain Springs Lodge and the Sprint loop, leaving beautiful corduroy, while the Ginzu's were out on the rest of the BCT all the way out to the northern terminus, hitting Stonewater Loop, Beaver Creek Loop, Swamp Creek Loop and Grizzly Mtn. on the way.
The main areas of concern are Hot Tub Hill (there is a map posted showing a walk around the lodge to rejoin the trail on the other side of the garage), driveway crossings, the Walk-In Trailhead, the far entrance to the Sprint Loop and one small section on the ascent of Grizzly Mtn, which are narrow and have bare/icy spots. Trails in the trees will be thin and uneven, so use caution. Almost all of the BCT (minus Hot Tub Hill and driveway crossings) still has coverage and can be skied in its entirety. We are still using the Stonewater detour to their walking bridge, so be sure to follow the signs.
SAFETY NOTICE: DO NOT SKI ON SLEIGH TRAILS at Mountain Springs Lodge. Please obey the signs and only ski on groomed ski trails.
CLOSED TRAILS are all of the Mill Hill Complex (Mill Hill, Rowdy Coyote, Chainsaw Ridge, Cougar Run and Lumi Lane) due to trail wide exposed ground, icy spots, melt outs and a mud slide. Signs are posted.
All wheel drive is recommended in all of the parking lots as they are all holding up pretty well, but they are icy, so please use caution when walking to the the trails.
Next weekend, we are planning on proceeding with the 2nd Tour de Plain Race of the season with a modified long course. Tour de Plain is our annual, family-friendly race series that brings community together for a fun race series including 4 events. Each one welcomes skiers of all ages and abilities to Tour the Plain Valley Ski Trails while raising support for the Plain Valley Nordic Team’s barrier-free ski education program. Join us on the snow!
