We've reached the first day of another new week and we are hoping that it will finally bring us some different weather and that hope may come true, but the temperatures will determine if it is good or if it will be challenge. Until then, we will be happy with the temperatures last night getting down into the low 20's and getting up into the 30's today under partly cloudy skies which will make for another day of great skiing.
Grooming happened last night freshening up the skate lanes and the same weather has us leaving the existing classic it is still mostly holding up and setting new tracks could be challenging in these low snow conditions and may actually make them worse. The SnoCat was out on the Meadow Loop and the Cut-Off's leaving beautiful corduroy again, while the Ginzu's were out on the BCT all the way out to the northern terminus, hitting Stonewater Loop, Beaver Creek Loop and Swamp Creek Loop on the way leaving the best corduroy that they can.
The main areas of concern are still Hot Tub Hill (there is a map posted showing a walk around the lodge to rejoin the trail on the other side of the garage), driveway crossings, the Walk-In Trailhead, the far entrance to the Sprint Loop and one small section on the ascent of Grizzly Mtn, which are narrow and have bare/icy spots. Trails in the trees will be thin and uneven, so use caution. Almost all of the BCT (minus Hot Tub Hill and driveway crossings) still has coverage and can be skied in its entirety. We are still using the Stonewater detour to their walking bridge, so be sure to follow the signs.
SAFETY NOTICE: DO NOT SKI ON SLEIGH TRAILS at Mountain Springs Lodge. Please obey the signs and only ski on groomed ski trails.
CLOSED TRAILS are all of the Mill Hill Complex (Mill Hill, Rowdy Coyote, Chainsaw Ridge, Cougar Run and Lumi Lane) due to trail wide exposed ground, icy spots, melt outs and a mud slide. Signs are posted.
All wheel drive is recommended in all of the parking lots as they are all holding up pretty well, but they are icy, so please use caution when walking to the the trails.
Next weekend, we are planning on proceeding with the 2nd Tour de Plain Race of the season with a short course and a modified long course. Tour de Plain is our annual, family-friendly race series that brings community together for a fun race series including 4 events. Each one welcomes skiers of all ages and abilities to Tour the Plain Valley Ski Trails while raising support for the Plain Valley Nordic Team’s barrier-free ski education program. Join us on the snow!
