Needless to say, we got the snow that we've been patiently asking for in the form of 10-12 inches on most of the trails, which made for quite the exciting first day of practice yesterday as groomers were scrambling to try to keep up with the snow in the Meadow Loop so that they had something to ski that wasn't up to their knees. So the good news is that we got a lot of new snow, the challenging news is that the temperatures barely got to freezing and the snow compacted very easily, but didn't freeze into the base like we need it to. We have done our best and were out last night roller packing (sintering, trying to form it into a solid mass and take the air out) the entire trail system to help make a solid base.
Early this morning, the SnoCat made another appearance and was out setting fresh skate and classic on the Meadow Loop, the Cut-offs, the BCT out to Mountain Springs Lodge and the Sprint Loop area and while the groom looks really nice in most places, it may still be soft because of the warm temps and the lack of that much needed solid base.
Ginzu's were out on the rest of the trail system also setting fresh skate and classic where able. We are temporarily opening up the rest of the trails in the Mill Hill Complex which means that Chainsaw Ridge (with and alternative connector, look for the signs to avoid melted thin spots), Lumi Lane and Cougar Run are now OPEN, but still use caution as it is still thin and bumpy with potential wet spots under the trees.
We are really excited to get the snow and will take all that we can get, but we are still technically in low snow conditions and there are still some areas under the trees to ski with caution and best conditions remain in the meadows around each of the trailheads. The forecast today is for temperatures in the mid 30's under cloudy skies with a chance for some light snow this afternoon. It seems like a great day to get out and enjoy some fresh snow!
Use caution in the parking lots as there may be soft and slushy areas.
Stonewater Ski Bridge is OPEN- The trail over the bridge at Stonewater is now being groomed, so the BCT can now be connected on its usual path and does not need the detour over the walking bridge. It is still a bit soft and wet spots are starting to peak through, so use caution.
SAFETY NOTICE: Please only ski on groomed ski trails and DO NOT SKI ON THE SLEIGH TRAILS at Mountain Springs Lodge. It is a huge risk for the horses and sleighs.
TRAIL PASSES ARE ALL ONLINE and can be purchased HERE, and and as always, kids ski free, but they also need an online PASS.
