This afternoon is our Winter Ski-a-thon!! Our youth will be skiing laps up at the Osprey Lodge to raise funds for camps, ski gear, transportation and scholarships! Every dollar raised goes directly back into Plain Valley Nordic Team. More information can be found HERE about how you can help sponsor a skier or donate.
We are still enjoying the fruits of the fresh snow that fell over the last 2 days reviving the trails a little bit. No new snow last night, but the temperatures did get down to just below freezing which should make for some great skiing this morning before the temps jump back up to around 40 under cloudy skies. Because of the fresh snow and warmer temps, new classic tracks were able to be set with Ginzu's last night on nearly all of the trails and the results were better than the night before as the trails were a little softer, but that also means that more snow was melting, adding moisture into the base and making some thin areas more icy, including under the trees. All of our open trails got their skate lanes freshened up and areas out in the meadows around the Osprey Lodge and around the Beaver Creek Loop to the creek before Stonewater Loop are maintaining the best conditions.
Not really any precipitation in the near future and daytime temperatures climbing to almost 50 for the next week will definitely make it tough on the trails, but we will continue to do our best to groom what we can. There is still a lot of great skiing especially if you are willing to make your way across the road.
OPEN TRAILS: Everything north of the creek crossing at Stonewater Loop, except the southern side of Grizzly Mtn.
CAUTION AREAS: Heading south on the BCT just past the Grizzly Mtn. junction down to Swamp Creek includes a narrow ribbon of snow through the trees, a 2 foot wide melt out that has 2 PVC pipes to help fill the gap and just after the road crossing are 2 driveways that will most likely be bare as the day warms up. Swamp Creek Loop is a bit rough in spots showing some bare spots and Grizzly Mtn is now a 2 way trail with a couple of narrow and exposed areas. There are also a few thin and icy spots in the trees to be aware of.
PARKING LOTS: The OSPREY LODGE TRAILHEAD at the main entrance of Thousand Trails is our last remaining open parking lot for the trails. The youth Ski-a-thon will be there from 3:30pm to 5:30pm, so parking will be limited and it will be best to plan accordingly.
