The colder temperatures at night are definitely helping the trails to stay firm longer and is making for some good skiing especially up around the Osprey Lodge Trailhead, which still has pretty nice coverage from the northern terminus down to the Campground Loop. Trails south from there get thinner as you head through the trees to the road crossing. The forecast for today is for some more sun and temps going from the high 20's up to the low 40's, so you will find mostly firm trails until the sun warms up the exposed areas. Ginzu's were out last night grooming the skate lanes on the BCT from the northern terminus down to the Mountain Springs Lodge Access, making a passes on the Loops on the way. We will continue to do our best to keep those trails open as long as we can, but you will find them getting thin, dirty and a bit uneven when you are in the trees and head farther south.
CAUTION AREAS: The whole Meadow Loop area which is not being groomed and has many thin and bare spots, but still has a ribbon of snow. The Walk-In Trailhead is the only access down there and needs to be walked all the way to the Meadow Loop intersection. The BCT detour at Stonewater is getting thinner with more ground being exposed. The upper part of the lower Stonewater Loop has a large melt out that is a challenge to get around. Grizzly Mtn. now has 2 trail wide melt outs on the ascent up, but we are keeping it open because there is still snow on the rest of the trail. There is also a 2 foot wide melt out running across the trail near the road crossing that has PVC pipe down to help fill the gap.
CLOSED TRAILS: Sprint Loop and all of the Mill Hill Complex and the BCT from the Mountain Springs Lodge turnaround to the end of the Hitching Post and the Mountain Springs Lodge Access, due to exposed ground and melt outs. Signs are posted. The next section to be closed will be from the Mountain Springs Lodge Access to the walking bridge at Stonewater, but we are hoping it will make it to the weekend.
PARKING LOTS: Both the MEADOW LOOP AND THE BEAVER CREEK parking lots are CLOSED due to mud. Please use the OSPREY LODGE PARKING LOT for parking or get dropped off at the Walk In Trailhead Access to ski the Meadow Loop area.
TOUR de PLAIN UPDATE: Because of the current conditions, we have made the difficult decision to cancel Race #3 this weekend, but we are still planning to have the Race #4 installment as part of the Washington Nordic Cup race on Sunday, Feb.22. Details to come.
