It's Friday the 13th... but for us that just means another great day to get out and ski before the snow gets scared off of the trails. There is still good coverage around the Osprey Lodge Trailhead and roughly half of our trails are still open. Conditions will be firm this morning especially in the trees as the temperatures again got down to the high 20's, but it is expected to warm up to almost 40 degrees under cloudy skies with a slight chance of rain this afternoon, so they should soften up a bit as the day goes on. It is true that melting has been going on and trails have been getting thinner with some icy spots, but there is still good skiing to be had between the northern terminus of the BCT and the Campground Loop, so we are still not giving up hope yet and will continue to do our best with the trails that we still have open.
Ginzu's were out again last night grooming the skate lanes on the BCT from the northern terminus down to the Stonewater Loop, making a passes on the Swamp Creek and Beaver Creek Loops on the way. Without fresh snow, the trails have remained too firm to have any success setting new classic, so they do remain firm and icy, but there are whisperings of potential snow next week...
CLOSED TRAILS: We unfortunately had to close all the trails south of Stonewater Loop.
CAUTION AREAS: Stonewater Loop in general is getting thin and has exposed spots along with the Stonewater BCT detour from the walking bridge. Grizzly Mtn. has 2 trail wide melt outs on the ascent up, but we are keeping it open because there is still snow on the rest of the trail. There is also a 2 foot wide melt out running across the trail north of the road crossing that has PVC pipe down to help fill the gap and the trails in the trees north of there to the junction with Grizzly Mtn are very thin.
PARKING LOTS: The OSPREY LODGE TRAILHEAD is our last remaining access point to the trails. The MEADOW LOOP AND THE BEAVER CREEK parking lots are CLOSED due to muddy conditions.
TOUR de PLAIN UPDATE: Because of the current conditions, we have made the difficult decision to cancel Race #3 this weekend, but we are still planning to have the Race #4 installment as part of the Washington Nordic Cup race on Sunday, Feb.22. Details to come.
