Happy Valentine's Day!! If you are looking to get out and ski with your sweetheart, we did get a dusting of fresh snow on our open trails and it's be the closest thing to a powder day that we've had for quite awhile. Temperatures hovered just above freezing, so trails will softened up as temps are expected to get up into the 40's again. There is still pretty good coverage on the BCT from the northern terminus down to the just past the junction with Grizzly Mtn. and if you are willing to go on a bit of an adventure, there are still good trails between Swamp Creek Loop and Stonewater Loop, but you will need to get past some exposed areas and bare driveway crossings to get there. The Osprey Lodge is our only open trailhead and there is limited parking, so we apologize in advance for any inconvenience.
Ginzu's were used last night and attempted to set new classic from the Osprey Lodge access trail to the northern terminus on the BCT and had mixed results. Skate lanes were freshened up on the BCT from the northern terminus down to and including the Stonewater Loop, making a passes on the Grizzly Mtn., Swamp Creek Loop and Beaver Creek Loop on the way producing pretty good results where there is still good snow cover.
CLOSED TRAILS: We unfortunately had to close all the trails south of Stonewater Loop along with the ascent side of Grizzly Mtn. due to poor conditions and exposed ground.
CAUTION AREAS: Trails especially in the trees could still be firm and icy under this fresh snow, so ski with care. In general, we are still in low snow conditions and there are more thin and exposed spots starting to show. It is getting more difficult to link the BCT to the trails south of the road as there are exposed spots in the trees as you head towards the road crossing including the trail wide melt out that has PVC pipes to help fill the gap. Across the road are a couple of bare driveway crossings on the way to Swamp Creek Loop and overall Stonewater Loop is getting a bit rough. We are still using the walking bridge detour to access Stonewater Loop, so follow the signs. Grizzly Mtn. is a 2 way trail now and there are a couple of narrow and exposed spots.
PARKING LOTS: The OSPREY LODGE TRAILHEAD is our last remaining access point to the trails and it has limited parking. The MEADOW LOOP AND THE BEAVER CREEK parking lots are CLOSED due to muddy conditions.
TOUR de PLAIN UPDATE: Because of the current conditions, we have made the difficult decision to cancel Race #3 this weekend, but we are still planning to have the Race #4 installment as part of the Washington Nordic Cup race on Sunday, Feb.22. Details to come.
